Weft Hair Extensions Pros and Cons

Celebrities and socialites alike use the hair weave to get the long, luxurious locks that people envy. The hair weave has gone mainstream and is a popular item at hair salons across North America. If you are considering getting a hair weave, you should first weight the pros and cons of getting one done. While it may seem like the ideal solution to boring hair, you may have to deal with pain to get the soft, shiny locks that you crave.

Pros:

Less Manipulation: This is one of the ultimate pros of  wearing a weave. Manipulation of your natural tresses is drastically reduced which can guarantee retaining more length.
Easier Transitioning: Though short hair is extremely beautiful and sexy as hell. For women who do not consider transitioning as an option, the Big Chop can be a scary plunge if one prefers longer lengths or is use to a certain look. True confidence comes from within but a weave can provide an easier transitioning period for a woman who may be debating on eliminating straightening chemicals and going through with the Big Chop.

More Time Management: Unlike myself, let’s face it, not everyone is completely satisfied with only manipulating their hair once a week. Many naturals want more variety during the week concerning hairstyles. Weaves can provide constant manipulation without the stress on your tresses.
Weaves also provide a great option for a highly active lifestyle.
Assists in Patience of Growth: Weaves can assist in patience of growing your natural hair since your focus is taken away because daily contact with your natural hair is now eliminated which can control your urges in grabbing that measuring tape every 5 seconds to progress new growth.
Protection from the Elements: Your weave has now become the cloak of protection for your hair, automatically resistant from harsh elements such as weather, too much sun exposure, and materials from clothing that can cause friction to natural strands. If wearing 100% human hair you now have the freedom to use heat based appliances without fear of damage to your natural strands.
Change: Cut and color with ease. Experimenting with color and cut while wearing a weave is a safe and easy way to play around with different looks.
Cons:
Temporary or Permanent Traction Alopecia: This is not to be taken lightly. Traction Alopecia is a form of alopecia or moderate hair loss caused by a self -induced pulling force or action usually caused by too tight braids, twists or styles, pony tails, weaves and extensions. Traction Alopecia is one of the most common examples of hair lost among African American women.
Hair Care Neglect: Neglecting of natural hair especially washing while sporting a weave can be a very easy mistake to make since your focus is on hair that is not your own. Extreme dryness of hair and scalp is one of the biggest and most common factors of natural hair while wearing a weave which can lead to breakage. Also lack of weave maintenance can cause odor and molding due to lack of regular air circulation and moisture that will accumulate within the weave creating an easier playground for fungus to grow and induce excessive shedding.
Constant upkeep: Even though I previously mentioned less manipulation with your natural hair as a pro while wearing a weave, there is a flipside of that coin in the constant upkeep of the weave itself. Since your hair is constantly growing about ½ an inch a month, weaves require consistent maintenance. Too much tension on new growth increases your chances of traction alopecia. Professionals suggest no
more then 6-12 weeks. I followed a consistent schedule of every 8 weeks.
Budget: To put it in lament terms, weaves ain’t cheap! Unless you know how to apply your own weave, constant upkeep means constant expenses. If you are thinking about a weave calculate the figures for a year and see if it is an investment you are able to afford, if not this can cause problems with upkeep that in the future could cause irreparable damage to your natural hair.

DIY – Wefts (using a cheap mini Sewing Machine)

This is a video I wanted to do long time ago, but I didn’t have a sewing machine, once I got some money from wig making I decided to pay some money for a mini sewing machine, it was cheap, 60$ for the machine and 10$ for shipping what a deal!

The wefts ended up perfect, yes the first ones were not that good but I was experimenting. Now I know exactly how to do them.

I used a fabric ribbon-glue to melt it inside the weft so it hold the hair better, I also used thinned nail polish for extra security.

The hair is the human-synthetic blend I did in the previous video.

How to Make Machine Sewn Wefts Tutorial

1. Set up the sewing machine.
Single Needle or Double needle- Set stitch to zig zag. Stitch tension between 8 and 9. Stitch width set at 2. Stitch length set at .5. Triple Needle- Set stitch to straight. Tension set between 7 and 9. Stitch width won’t matter. Stitch length set at .5.
2. Thread the machine. Use extra bobbins if you are using a double or triple needle.
3. Place masking tape sticky side up, with the sides folded under to hold it to the work surface. Place 2 strips parallel with an inch gap.
4. Spread the bulk hair across the tape evenly.
5. Saturate the hair with hairspray.
6. Allow hair to dry and then apply a second layer of tape over the first.
7. Cut off the excess edges of the tape.
8. Load the hair into the sewing machine and sew in the gap between the tape.
9. Flip the hair, and do another pass right above the previous stitch.
10. Repeat 4 more times with a single needle, once more with a double, and you are done with a triple needle.
11. Place the cardstock in between the pieces of tape.
12. Use a flat Iron or a regular iron to crease the top into a fold.
13. Load back into the machine and create the top stitch.
14. Remove the masking tape.
15. Apply nail glue to the ends of the weft to ensure they will not unravel.
16. Allow to dry and then cut away the tails.
17. Install.

What’s a Hair Weft

A hair weft is an extension of the hair designed to make one’s hair appear thicker or longer. This type of hair piece is particularly popular among teenagers and young adults, though they are accessible for most ages. Both synthetic hair pieces as well as human hair pieces are used to make hair wefts.

Another term often used in place of hair weft is hair curtain. This is due to the curtain-like appearance of the weft itself. Unlike many other types of hair extensions, hair wefts are usually long sections of hair that are glued to the scalp or attached in another manner. Though many hair wefts are straight, they are also available in wavy and curly textures.

Wefts are typically available in most lengths desired. If made from human hair, a hair weft may be cut, straightened, dyed, curled, or treated otherwise as real hair. Some synthetic wefts may be treated similarly, though others may break down or yield results other than the ones intended, such as discoloration.

Many people apply hair extensions for long-term use. Though a hair weft can be used repeatedly for long-term use, it can also be attached as a temporary application. Some people use hair wefts as such for party costumes, theater performances, and other short-term needs. Most hair wefts cover a limited area of the scalp, hence many people opt to purchase four to six wefts to create a uniform appearance.

Most customers who use a hair weft for long-term needs prefer very realistic or human extensions. High-quality hair wefts made from real human hair are known as remy hair. Remy hair retains its cuticle layer from its original host, making it appear more natural than synthetic or damaged hair. Bases for hair wefts are sealed with a coating, such as polyurethane.

There are several different methods used to attach a hair weft to a person’s hair. One of the most common methods is applying a special glue to the hair. This method can cause a health concern, however, as many hair glues contain formaldehyde and other potentially hazardous chemicals.

Double-sided tape adhesive designed just for hair wefts is also available. This adhesive material can typically last for up to two weeks. Handmade hair wefts may require a skin weft application. This is done through a skin weft sealer tool, which has a similar appearance to a hair straightener. Hair weft removal products are also available.
